Waihī Beach first accessible beach in NZ
Five years ago, locals, businesses, supporters and volunteers came together to fundraise, buy and set up beach mats and beach wheelchairs. Every year, from Labour Weekend to Easter, volunteers lay the mats so more people can get to the beach and into the surf.
Last weekend, Live Well Waihi Beach and Waihi Beach Surf Lifesaving Club opened a fully accessible changing facility inside the lifeguard clubhouse, designed with guidance from a local accessibility ambassador. Lovely to meet Dame Catriona Williams!
There’s also accessible beach days and adaptive surfing lessons – and there’s more on the way.
We love how the Waihī Beach community is backing better access so more people can enjoy a classic Kiwi beach day with confidence and independence. This work shows what’s possible when communities and organisations work together to remove barriers. Congratulations Live Well Waihi Beach and Waihi Beach Surf Lifesaving Club!
